Answers from others to my Are We A Community? Questionnaire of sorts, can be found on the updated version of last blog entry. Made me remember: You know what's so cool about this fandom? The veritable plethora of outrageously intelligent, literate, opinionated women. God. I love it. Love. Love. It. Which makes THIS whole thing so odd to me. Misogyny in slash? Ok, I buy that some people see it that way. I just don't....frankly I don't GET it. We're all women here, and yea, no one is harder on a woman than another woman. But if I read most of the feedback I received on my previous entry correctly, we're not just a bunch of loonies that no one can relate to or understand. We are alike in more respects than not, and that kinship is reflected in our "campfire tales" as Te so eloquently once put it. We have this whole folk community thing happening, and it's huge. It's empowering. I can't *find* the misogyny. Or maybe I deliberately ignore it. I can only speak for me, but I write M/M slash, because I can't *do* M/M slash. I live het. I could live femslash. But M/M slash will always remain a physical impossibility. It's a fantasy I simply *can't * explore any other way. It isn't at all related to how I feel about the female characters on the show. I have loved and hated Buffy in vicious circles, and I have always slashed Angel. Yes, I know, that's anecdotal evidence, party of one. But on the flipside, if a male wrote F/F slash (as god knows they probably do, and I'd venture to guess do quite poorly *g*) does that make them anti-male, or even MORE misogynist since they are seen as exploting females for their own pleasure? I accept full responsibility for getting off on exploiting the male characters of my choice. I didn't burn my bra for nothin ya know. (Ok, I didn't burn my bra. No one would notice if I did. Maybe we could get Jess to burn hers...but I digress.) Sometimes, a cigar is a cigar. Sometimes, slash is eye candy, brain candy, mental masturbation. Not much more. My two cents. And in other news: I got violently ill over the weekend (threw up more on Fri. night that I have in my entire adult life) and called in sick today. Come to find out that 1/3 of the patients and 1/4 of the staff where I work now have whateverthefuck this thing is, and the Health Dept. has been called in. Advised to take tomorrow off as well. Swell. I'm Typhoid Fucking Mary. |
